SECURITY measures in to car parks have put the brake on crime, it was revealed last night.
Middlesbrough's final three council-run car parks, Wood Street, Mima and France Street, have been awarded the Park Mark safer parking award in recognition of security standards.
All the council's town centre car parks have reached this standard.
The awards coincide with news that only one crime was recorded at the car parks in February, March and April.
A Middlesbrough Council spokeswoman said: "Quality maintenance, good lighting, closed circuit television and parking patrol officers are all factors in ensuring that it is safer to park in the council's town centre car parks than on your own drive."
Barry Coppinger, member for environment services, said: "This is fantastic news for the drivers who park in Middlesbrough and the council workers who achieve such high standards.
"We have 2.5 million cars through our car parks each year and only a handful of crimes."
