AN annual charity football match in memory of a Royal Marine who died 13 years ago has raised £213 for St Cuthbert's Hospice, in Durham.
Witton Gilbert and Framwellgate Moor United meet each year to play for a trophy in memory of Lee Stephenson, who played for both clubs, and died aged 24 of a heart attack in 1994.
This year's match was played on King George's Field, Framwellgate Moor, and Witton Gilbert fought hard for a 1-0 win.
The proceeds from the event, which also included a quiz and a raffle, came to £213, which will be given to the hospice.
Paul Ferguson, one of the organisers, said the raffle included prizes of wine, spirits, and there was the auction of a signed Sunderland shirt and football and a signed Hartlepool ball.
He said: "There were also very generous donations from the Lambton Hounds, in Pity Me, St Cuthbert's Butchers, in Chester-le-Street, The Tasty Bite and The Tandoori Centre, both in Framwellgate Moor, Linda and Derek Pratt, Gary Usher and also Framwellgate Club and Dave the club steward, all of which were greatly received."
