DURHAM City's MP has praised an organisation set up to co-ordinate the work of voluntary mental health groups.

Mental Health North-East held its first annual meeting at Bowburn, in the constituency of Dr Roberta Blackman-Woods.

The organisation was started to promote best practice and encourage groups to give the best service they can.

Dr Blackman-Woods told the meeting that the Government wanted to work more closely with the voluntary and community sector in the planning and delivery of mental health services.

She said Mental Health North-East had an important role as an umbrella organisation in continuing to challenge the Government to deliver better services.

She paid tribute to the organisation's work and said it was being recognised as a leader in its field and that similar organisations were being set up in other regions.
