WORK has started on constructing the main pool of the £12.3m swimming complex for Durham.
Bluestone poured more than 800 tonnes of concrete to form a plinth that will be the base of the 25-metre, eight-lane pool.
Sean Sweet, project manager, said: "We're creating the base in one block, to give it the greatest possible structural strength, and ensure that the pool is watertight."
The complex, in Freeman Place, will also have a sports hall, learner pool, dance studio and fitness club.
Most of the money for the project has been raised through the sale of council land for development by the Durham Villages Regeneration Company, which Durham City Council part-owns.
