DISASTER victims in the Pacific Ocean are being given vital support from villagers in North Yorkshire.
People on the island of Kolombangara, in the Solomon Islands, were devastated by a tsunami.
The tidal wave hit the island in April, killing 45 people and destroying homes and posessions.
The disaster also destroyed the villagers' canoes, which are vital for fishing, transport and survival.
Fundraisers in Coxwold, near Thirsk, are hoping to collect £600 at a fun day to pay for ten replacement canoes.
Organiser Georgie Bloor said: "Canoes are the villagers' lifeline and they rely on them to do everything.
"Aid is getting through to the area, but it may not reach these communities.
"So, hopefully, at the end of the fundraising day, we will be able to sponsor ten canoes for them."
The Fauconburg Inn, in Coxwold, is hosting the fundraising day on Saturday, June 2.
The free event runs between 11am and 3pm with a raffle and barbecue and fun games to join in.
