CHILDREN from all Richmond and Swaledale primary schools have starring roles in a summer festival.

The youngsters will perform at the Swaledale Festival, which runs from May 26 to June 10.

Pupils take part in a concert version of Carmen, appear in a locally-written fairy tale and join youngsters from neighbouring Wensleydale and festival singer and songwriter Chris Hoban for the Swaledale Songbook concert.

Secondary school students also get involved in the festival. Following an Elgar workshop, Richmond School pupils play a concert with King's Camerata, alongside professional musicians. Pupils from the school also join the Swaledale Chamber Players to perform excerpts from Grieg's incidental music for Peer Gynt.

The Darlington and the Dales Youth Orchestra give an afternoon concert, which includes Haydn's Trumpet Concerto and works by Mozart and Schubert.

Justin Doyle, festival artistic director, invites singers of any age or ability to a choral workshop at Arkengarthdale Methodist Church on May 30, at 5pm, when the music includes folk songs and spirituals.

Festival programmes and tickets are available from the box office, at Hudson House, Reeth, on 01748-880019 or online via digyorkshire.com. Programme details are also on www.swaledale-festival.org.uk
