THE Royal Shakespeare Company has marked its 30th anniversary of working with the Theatre Royal in Newcastle.
William Houston posed on the theatre's roof in Roman costume in the role of Coriolanus, the first production in the RSC season, which runs until October.
In 1977, the RSC's first Newcastle residency saw Ian McKellen playing Romeo in Trevor Nunn's production of Romeo and Juliet.
Thirty years on, Sir Trevor will direct Sir Ian as King Lear and, later in the season, Frances Barber and William Gaunt in The Seagull, .
Philip Bernays, chief executive of the Theatre Royal, said: "The Royal Shakespeare Company has been a valued and important part of the Theatre Royal, and Newcastle, for 30 years and long may this relationship continue.
"The arrival of the RSC in Newcastle is always an exciting event and a theatrical highlight and there will be more opportunities to see the productions, and participate in the community and education programme, during the six-month season."
He added: "As the 'founding fathers' of the RSC in Newcastle, we are honoured to welcome Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Trevor Nunn back to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Newcastle season."
