DURHAM City MP Roberta Blackman-Woods has welcomed a new code of conduct for councillors.
The aim of the code is to ensure elected members of authorities are accountable to the local electorate.
The rules were brought into force earlier this month.
Dr Blackman-Woods said: "A good set of rules governing councillors' conduct is vital for confidence in our local democracy.
"I am pleased that these new rules will allow local councillors to be more effective advocates for their areas, while at the same time making sure that they act in line with crucial principles, such as honesty and openness."
Dr Blackman-Woods said it was important that council resources, such as the Durham City Council's Durham City News, are used to inform residents of the range of council services.
