A HOTLY-TIPPED North-East band are to appear on national TV playing a live gig from their local cafe.

Fans of Tyneside rockers Kubichek! enjoyed bacon sandwiches and tea while the group recorded a show for Channel 4.

The band released their debut album earlier this year and have been earmarked as the latest act to emerge from the region's thriving music scene.

Noteable Kubichek! fans include Maximo Park, The Futureheads and Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe.

The four-piece, who come from Gateshead and Newcastle, will follow in the footsteps of chart-toppers including Primal Scream, The Arctic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand when they appear on the Transmission music show with a televised gig from Peter's Snack Bar.

The band take their name from the Kubicek family - the owners of the cafà next to Newcastle Central Station for more than 25 years.

"Channel 4 asked us to record a show from a venue that really meant something to us, so we chose the snack bar," said bass guitarist Michael Coburn, 27.

"We are good friends with the owner's son and we thought the name sounded cool, so we decided to use it for the band.

"Because the owners are our mate's mum and dad, I was a bit worried that something might get broken during the gig. They looked a bit nervous when we were stacking up our amplifiers, but it was great in the end and I think they really enjoyed it."

The group's first album, Not Enough Night, won rave reviews from the NME and the band are to play Reading Festival this summer.

Nearly 70 fans packed out the cafà after winning tickets for the unusual gig on the band's website.

George Kubicek, 61, who took over the cafà in 1981 after moving to Newcastle from his native Czech Republic, said: "I'm a country music fan and I like old rock and roll music, but I enjoyed the beat and the harmony.

"I spoke to the television producer and he told me that the band has a big future.

"We wish them all the best. They work very hard, they are very friendly and they perform very well."

Kubichek! appear on Channel 4's Transmission at 11.40pm on Friday.

The band's next single, Stutter, is released on 30:30 records on May 28.
