THE new £18m building at Bishop Auckland College hosted its first event yesterday.
Students and staff experienced a taste of different cultures at the college's annual International Day.
The event, which aims to promote equality and diversity, started three years ago and was previously held at the old college building.
Events included French singing lessons for nursery children, salsa dancing, international football competitions, and food and drink tasting sessions, along with a talk by MEP Stephen Hughes.
Ruth Connaughton, international officer for Bishop Auckland College, said: "We hold International Day to promote diversity and to teach the students about different cultures in a fun environment.
"It has been great and everyone who came along, from the nursery children to staff, have enjoyed themselves and learned something.
"The new building is fantastic and it's brilliant that we've been able to hold the event here."
The building has been designed and equipped with the latest technology.
It includes a gymnasium, restaurant, licensed bar, child care, IT and hair and beauty departments.
The building opens in September 2007, celebrating 50 years of learning in Woodhouse Lane.
It is predicted that the new facilities will increase student applications next term by 25 per cent.
