CLASSIC films from two of Hollywood’s greatest comics will be re-screened in cinemas across the UK and Ireland thanks to an ardent fan.

Laurel and Hardy’s comedy offerings will be screened in high definition later this month in two double bills. Comic Capers, Way Out West and Towed in a Hole will be screened on October 20 with Block Heads and The Music Box on November 15 and 17.

Stan Laurel attended Gainford Academy and lived in Bishop Auckland, studying at King James I Grammar School between 1902 and 1903 after his parents, Arthur and Madge, established a theatre in the town. The family later moved to North Shields.

Glasgow-based Ross Owen, who masterminded the project, wants to introduce young people to the hapless pair’s comic genius, adding that they have not been in the news since 1975.

The radio presenter and marketing manager said: “As a Laurel and Hardy enthusiast, I put out a tweet in April urging people to go and see Laurel and Hardy at cinemas and people tweeted me back saying that there weren’t any on.”

After vowing to do something about it he set up the first viewings in June. He hopes the two double bills will be equally well-received.

He added: “They have influenced so many comedians. It is something to do with the brotherly love between them that makes their films irresistible.”
