HUNDREDS of cats and dogs have been "snipped and chipped" thanks to a joint operation between the RSPCA and police in Chester-le-Street.
Four roadshows were staged in and around the town at the end of last month offering free micro-chipping and neutering vouchers.
The microchip contains vital details of the animal and its owner in the event of being found either injured or as a stray, while the vouchers are to be used to reduce the numbers of unwanted puppies and kittens.
Events were held in community venues and managed by RSPCA officials and police community support officers (PCSO).
A total of 360 cats and dogs were chipped, and 300 neutering vouchers were handed out. The success of the roadshows has encouraged organisers to put together another series for later this year.
PCSO Adrian Richards said: "We are delighted the roadshows were so popular and our thanks must go to all the venues who allowed us to use their facilities.
"And although it was not the point of the exercise many people also made contributions to the RSPCA. Their donations raised £167, which will help the charity."
