CYCLISTS are preparing for a tenth annual charity ride.

The 30- mile Stokesley Charity Bike Ride will raise at least £5,000 for the Unicorn Centre, a horse riding centre at Hemlington, near Middlesbrough, which provides riding therapy and learning opportunities for disabled children and adults in the Tees Valley area.

Proceeds from the event will help to buy a horse to replace an older animal that is due to retire.

More than 60 cyclists have already signed up for the race, which takes place next Sunday - but organisers say the final number could be as high as 300.

Organiser Paul Mackintosh said: "The aim is to raise £5,000 for the Unicorn Centre, so, if there are any cyclists who want to raise money for a good local cause, they should come along and take part."

The event is sponsored for the second year by the Co-op's Stokesley store.

Co-op supervisor Charlotte Newton said: "We're delighted to be able to sponsor the bike ride again, as we're very much a local community retailer.

"I'm sure all those taking part will have a great time and, although they'll probably be shattered at the end, it's all in a good cause."

The ride starts at the Co-op, then follows the route of the River Leven to Great Ayton.

Cyclists ride on to Ingleby Greenhow, then up the very steep incline to the first checkpoint, in Clay Bank car park.

The ride continues at a fast pace down Clay Bank to Great Broughton, turning left to pass through Kirby, Carlton, and Faceby. The route then crosses the A172 to the second checkpoint at the Dog and Gun pub, in Potto, then on through Hutton Rudby and Seamer, before returning to the Co-op.

Each cyclist will each be given snacks and drinks by the Co-op before, during and after the ride, and basic mechanical support, while first aid cover will be provided by the St John Ambulance.

Entry is £5 in advance, or £6 on the day. Riders who complete the course will receive a medal and a certificate. The ride begins at 10am. Cyclists can register between 9am and 9.45am. To register online, go to www.1bm.me. uk.registration.asp
