DURHAM County Council will close Eggleston Abbey Bridge, in Barnard Castle, to traffic from 8am, on October 11.

The closure will include a 136-metre length of the C146, including a 25-metre section of C165 Abbey Road, between the fixed traffic light heads either side of the bridge.

The closure is being put in so bridge inspection works can be undertaken which are expected to take eight hours to complete.

An alternative route will be available to traffic from the northern side of the closure from C146 north westerly onto C44 Westwick Road that leads westerly past Bowes Museum then southerly and north westerly on A67 over the Barnard Castle Bridge and continuing southerly on B6277 to A66 then easterly to the junction with C165 to the south eastern side of the closure and vice versa.

A HGV route will be signed from C165 junction with A66 at Rokeby via A66 south easterly to Scotch Corner then north easterly on A1/A1(M) to junction 58 (Barton) then north westerly on A68 to West Auckland then generally south westerly on A688 to Barnard Castle, and vice versa.
