ST GEORGE'S Day is being marked in style by the village that bears his name.
Sisters Cynthia Ball and Jillian Howe hoisted the flag at Middleton St George, near Darlington, after leading a successful campaign for a flagpole.
Parish councillors and other residents joined them yesterday to raise the flag.
The pole was erected in November in time for Remembrance Sunday, and usually flies the Union flag.
This week, its place will be taken by the St George's cross to mark the saint's day today.
"The sisters requested we fly the flag for St George," said parish councillor Doris Jones.
"We are called Middleton St George. If we are going to have a flag we should be proud to fly the St George cross."
