This shiraz is a deep, dark red colour full of extract. The nose is pronounced with a little spice and a hint of burnt rubber.

It tastes of rich black plums and is full of berry fruit flavours with black pepper and spice in the background. It's 14 1/2 per cent alcohol but well-balanced in acid and tannin. It's one to drink on its own or with strong meat or game dishes.

Wyndham have been making wine from the shiraz grape for 175 years and for the price their range takes some beating. They seem to have perfected the use of this grape which in taste and quality is nothing like the syrahs of the Rhone valley, made from the same grape.

Not many wines are under priced these days but Morrisons sell this one for £7.05, in my opinion it's worth at least a pound more. Morrisons also do a "the best" range and under the title French Viognier is a white wine which is recommended. It's a Vin de Pays D'oc of 13 per cent alcohol produced from fourteen-year-old low yielding vines - which is usually fairly expensive to produce. It has an aromatic floral aroma with ripe peach and honeysuckle flavours plus a little lychee. If you get the right sauce with Salmon croute you have a very good wine/food match.
