A LOLLIPOP lady will be hanging up her uniform for the final time next week after more than 20 years of service.
Andrea Waldock, 55, will officially retire from her role at Toft Hill Primary School, on Friday, December 19, after helping thousands of children cross the road over 23 years.
The grandmother, from High Etherley, said she would take away fond memories of her time at the school, where she will continue to work as a dinner lady.
“I have really enjoyed doing it but I have had problems with my neck and shoulder so as the cold is coming in I thought it was time to finish now but then I will be walking back up next year with my grandson, Regan, who will be starting at the school,” she said.
“I have loved it though. I have laughed with parents and cried with parents over the years about different things that have happened and it’s been lovely.”
Mrs Waldock said memorable moments included helping both parents and children cross the road in the snow and welcoming children on their first day.
“From when I started, those bairns are now driving themselves, and they will always stop for me,” she added.
This week former Peterlee mayor Mary Cartwright launched a drive for a national Lollipops Day to recognise the efforts of the men and women who help school children cross the road safely.
Ms Cartwright is appealing for children and parents to give cards or gifts to lollipop people on Monday, December 15.
