THE Principal of Redcar & Cleveland College, Gary Groom, has unexpectedly left his post.
A statement was released this morning.
It read: "The Board of Governors regretfully announce the departure of Mr Gary Groom, the Principal & Chief Executive of Redcar & Cleveland College. Mr Groom will be leaving the College to pursue personal interests.
"Gary joined the College in 2005 and, under his stewardship, it has seen significant changes including the development and building of a whole new college estate and growth in Higher Education, including the establishment of a Higher Education Centre on the campus in Redcar. More recently, it announced plans to create a unique and exciting training facility for the Oil & Gas sector, which will be part of the National College network.
"Well respected in the Further Education Sector, Gary has been the longest serving Principal in the Tees Valley and one of the longest serving Principals in the North East. In recognition of this regard Gary was recently elected by the Principals of the region to represent their interests nationally as a member of the Board of the Association of Colleges."
Mr Groom left his post on November 30.
"The Board would like to express its appreciation for the contribution made by Mr Groom and wishes him well in his future endeavours," the statement said.
Of his time in office Mr Groom said: “It has been a real privilege to have been the Principal of Redcar & Cleveland College for the best part of ten years. During that time, we have reinvented and moved the College forwards in so many ways and have celebrated the magnificent achievements of thousands of students who have moved on to some amazing jobs and higher level studies. I have enjoyed every minute.
“I look forward to seeing the new opportunities for development in the Oil & Gas sector unfold as the College begins another exciting chapter in its history, which will take it from strength to strength.
“Finally I would like to thank past and present members of staff for their support and encouragement over the years. We achieved so much together and I know there is more to come. I wish the staff and students well for the future.”
