ARMED robbers snatched money from a security van at Greggs in Newcastle today.
At 11.30am this morning police received a report of a robbery at the premises in Binswood Avenue, Blakelaw. It's believed the offenders approached a security driver and threatened him before taking money from the van.
It's thought the offenders were armed with weapons, although the type of weapons has not yet been confirmed.
The security driver was not injured.
Extra officers are in the area to carry out enquiries and to offer reassurance to the local community.
Chief Inspector Sheila Foggo said: "Enquiries are in the initial stages to identify and trace the offenders and I'd urge anyone with information to contact police.
"Extra officers are in the area to both carry out enquiries and to reassure people in the area."
It's believed the offenders left the scene in a white van. Anyone who may have seen such a vehicle in the local area or anyone acting suspiciously around a white van, or any witnesses, are asked to contact Northumbria Police on 101 ext 69191 quoting reference 460 091214 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
