POLICE hunting a knifeman who raided a newsagents at the weekend have made an arrest.

A man armed with a large, broad-bladed knife stormed the McColl’s shop in Washington Crescent, Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, at about 2pm on Saturday, December 6.

The man demanded staff open the till and when they refused he jumped over the counter and stole cigarettes.

Today (Monday, December 8), police arrested a 22-year-old man from Durham City in connection with the robbery

A McColl’s spokesperson confirmed no-one was hurt, adding: “The health, safety and well-being of our employees is of utmost importance. We are working closely with the relevant authorities in response to this incident.”
