POLICE are investigating an alleged assault in a Darlington classroom that led to a schoolboy being admitted to hospital.
Jakub Kumanski, 13, was left with black eyes and a bruised and swollen face after the alleged attack by a fellow pupil during a Year Nine English lesson at St Aidan’s Academy in Darlington.
Jakub was kept under observation at Darlington Memorial Hospital for eight hours following the assault and his parents have lodged a complaint about how the incident was handled by St Aidan’s staff.
Darlington Police have confirmed they are investigating the incident as an offence of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Because of the young age of those involved, the police’s youth offending team are heading the investigation which will involve a range of parties and is likely to take several weeks to conclude.
St Aidan’s Academy has launched its own investigation and a spokesman has said that their initial findings show that the staff acted appropriately at the time and in dealing with issues raised by the Kumanskis before the incident.
Responding to the report in today’s (Monday, December 8) Northern Echo, a spokesperson for the Academy said: “We can confirm that an incident between two students occurred on Monday, November 24, 2014, which is part of ongoing Police enquiries and it would not be appropriate for us to comment further on anything that might form part of those enquiries.”
