TWO of the region’s mayors have attended a charity Christmas party for children.
The seasonal Steps event for children with lower limb conditions and their families was held at the Holiday Inn, Washington on Saturday.
The Mayor of Sunderland, Councillor Stuart Porthouse, was joined by the Mayor and Mayoress of Gateshead, Councillor Neil Weatherley and his wife, Hazel, who are from Birtley, near Chester-le-Street.
Their daughter Rachael Weatherley, who is a trustee of Steps, said: “The idea of the party was to be able to get together and offer support and advice as well as having a great time.
“Entertainment was provided by the wonderful, Mister Twister. He made some fantastic balloon models for all the children and some adults to take home.
Steps is one of Councillor Weatherley's chosen charities for his Mayoral year of office as five years ago his granddaughter was diagnosed at 14 months as having hip dysplasia.
She underwent surgery, spent three months in a cast and has regular check-ups to ensure her hip continues to develop normally.
Miss Weatherley said: “A wonderful time was had by all and it was great to see two local mayors coming together to support our event.”
