A MAN is facing a lengthy prison sentence after walking into a police station and confessing to child sex crimes more than ten years ago.
John Plews, 53, from Redcar, east Cleveland, appeared in court yesterday and admitted a charges from the late 1990s and early 2000s.
He will be sentenced at Teesside Crown Court in the New Year after background reports have been prepared by Probation Service officials.
A judge told Plews that he will be jailed - but gave him bail until his next appearance because of his confession after handing himself in.
"Obviously a prison sentence of some years is inevitable," Judge Howard Crowson said. "You will receive a prison sentence as I'm sure you know.
"I am going to grant you bail until next month, which is unusual in by case like this, but you handed yourself in to admit these matters."
Plews, of Hill Crescent, Redcar, pleaded guilty to rape, three charges of indecency with a child and six counts of indecent assault.
His lawyer, Peter Wishlade, told the court: "On his behalf, I accept the inevitability of this prosecution which was brought upon himself.
"Mr Plews simply walked into the police station as a result of guilt, and admitted the facts. Given that, he is unlikely to abscond."
