DRIVERS have been warned about the dangers of de-icing their cars by leaving them unattended with the engines running after two were stolen in Stockton.

Opportunist thieves have pounced on unsuspecting motorists waking up to first cold snap of the year.

Cleveland Police has received two reports of cars stolen from driveways this morning (Wednesday), the first theft occurred at around 7.15am at an address on Millfield Close in Eaglescliffe and the second at 7.30am from The Yew Walk, Long Newton.

Chief Superintendent Glenn Gudgeon said: “We would urge people not to leave their vehicles unattended with the engines running, even just to pop into the house for a moment.

“It is all too easy for an opportunist thief to take advantage and it may mean that you can’t make an insurance claim."

He added: "With the arrival of the cold weather which is going to be with us over the next few months, please keep in mind that it only takes a couple of seconds for someone to steal your vehicle. Don’t be left out in the cold by thieves.”
