ALMOST half of parents in the North-East are worse off this Christmas than they were last year, according to new figures.

A survey of 2,070 UK parents by children’s charity, Barnado’s, found that the economic upturn has failed to affect nine in ten families in the region, with only a small minority saying Christmas will be more affordable this year.

More than 40 per cent said Christmas will be less affordable this year, compared with 12 per cent who are finding it more affordable.

The survey found parents are struggling with soaring household expenses and cuts to benefits, with low and middle income households struggling the most.

Barnardo’s CEO Javed Khan said: “All year, we’ve heard the country’s economic recovery heralded from on high. But the stark reality is that the view from the North-East of England looks very different for many families.

Many parents tell us that their Christmas finances are in worse state than they were a year ago. Some parents are forced to make harsh choices between heating the home, feeding the family and buying clothes and other essentials.”

He added: “The festive season should be a time for special family celebrations. It is tragic that it has become a matter of dread and personal deprivation for many parents. But it is truly heart-warming to see the lengths to which these parents will go to keep it special for their children.”
