A CHARITY volunteer has been selected from five inspirational people in an unsung hero competition.
Ken Sadler, from Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, has been crowned Durham’s Unsung Hero following a search by Modern Rugs.
The Newton Aycliffe-based rug manufacturer invited charities from across the region to nominate dedicated staff and volunteers for the red carpet treatment.
Five finalists were selected and the public was urged to vote for person they believe most deserve the title and a luxury experience day worth £200.
Mr Sadler was nominated by other volunteers at Lifeline Community Action, a Christian charity which helps people of all faiths and background in times of crisis.
In just over a year he has helped the team support over 2,500 people and distribute over £750,000 to people in need.
Mr Saddler distributes care packages, takes people on holiday, provides lifts and helps with computer courses, despite suffering with his health.
He said: “Thank you to all those who nominated and voted for me, it has all come as a total surprise!
“I'd like to thank the Lifeline Community Action team who work so hard to make sure we are able to reach the marginalised. It’s only together that we can do something that will actually make the difference in their lives.
“I’d also like to congratulate all the hard working people that were nominated for this competition.”
Ben Dale, managing director of Modern Rugs, added, “The competition has highlighted just how many amazing people there are in County Durham worth shouting about. It is a privilege to be able to treat Ken to a taste of the red carpet lifestyle.”
