ALMOST 2,000 children from across the region have been taught how to deal with and prevent emergency situations during a visit to an RAF base.
Pupils from more than 80 schools received safety information and advice during the course of the two-week Crucial Crew campaign at RAF Leeming, near Bedale.
At a series of workshops organised by Hambleton District Council and North Yorkshire Police, the children were presented with various dangerous or challenging situations, such as a road accident or a gas leak, before taking part in role play exercises.
The pupils received instruction on subjects ranging from internet and road safety, to the recovery position and safety in the home.
They also received guidance on dealing with specific emergencies and how to call the emergency services for help.
Police youth officer Paul Stephenson said: “We try to make it as realistic as possible in an interactive workshop environment.
"The key message is for them to think about their actions as young individuals and having the key information which they might have to use at some point in their lives."
