A WORLD class opera singer returned to his former school to perform as he officially opened its new £17,000 stage and lights system.
Ian Storey visited Chilton Primary School, County Durham, to perform three songs as part of an event which also featured pupils and youth clubs.
Mr Storey, who has performed in many of the world’s biggest opera houses, said: “It was great fun and I really, really enjoyed it.
“It was really interesting for me to see what the school is doing in regards to music.
“I’m an old boy from the school and I saw people there who I haven’t seen for years and it was nice to open the new stage area.”
The work on the stage, lights, curtains and music system was part funded by the school.
Money was also donated from Councillor Christine Potts, Durham County councillor for Chilton, via her neighbourhood budget and the Four Together Area Action Partnership.
Christine Samways, the school’s business manager, said: “We had a fabulous night and there were at least 180 people at the event.
“Several groups such as the Chilton Junior Youth Club and New Dance Generation, in Ferryhill, took part.”
