CRIME victims are being asked to consider joining a panel which will scrutinise the use of police cautions and other penalties in North Yorkshire.
Police and Crime Commissioner Julia Mulligan and Jonathan Mortimer, the independent chairman of the Out of Court Disposal Scrutiny Panel, are seeking volunteers to help examine the use of cautions and other non-court penalties.
It was set up earlier in the year in response to concern about the use of Out of Court Disposals in the county.
The orders are designed to allow police to deal with low-level offending which doesn’t merit a court prosecution.
The panel’s objectives are to ensure penalties are used appropriately and make recommendations to North Yorkshire Police.
The body already has an independent chairman and representatives from criminal justice partners such as magistrates, but members of the public are being encouraged to join.
Police and Crime Commissioner Julia Mulligan said: “I want victims’ needs to be at the heart of everything we do.
“Having members of the public and victims of crime on the panel will also increase transparency and understanding.”
Anyone who has been a victim of crime where an Out of Court Disposal was used or considered and who wishes to put their name forward should email; info@northyorkshire-pcc.gov.uk with their experience and why they think they are the right person to join the panel
The post is voluntary but expenses are reimbursed.
People can also put their name forward online by visiting: www.northyorkshire-pcc.gov.uk or by calling 01423-569562.
