PRIMARY school children have created some promising entries for a rugby club's mascot competition.

Youngsters from Hurworth Primary School, near Darlington, visited Darlington Mowden Park rugby club on Tuesday (November 18), to work on their designs.

The club is running a competition to design a fun and fitting mascot to cheer on the team before and during matches.

Anyone aged between five and 18 can enter the competition, provided their design is all their own work and not copied from an existing mascot.

Anne Rose, Mowden Park's community manager, said: "Mowden Park currently doesn’t have a mascot and rather than the club just coming up with the concept, we thought it was an ideal opportunity to engage local schools, clubs and children.

"We launched the competition with a number of schools that have been on our arena tours and the response has been fantastic.

"There have already been some excellent designs and ideas"

The winning mascot, which will be unveiled at the final home game of the season, in April, will become a key feature of the club's matchday and community activity.

Entries can now be submitted up to and including Friday, January 9.

A prize bundle including free coaching, stadium tours, kit and match tickets will be on offer for the winner.

The drawing can be in colour or black and white. Paints, pencils, pens, crayons or a combination may be used.

Items can be glued, cut out or attached to your mascot design.

The winners will be notified by the end of January, either by post or telephone.
