MORE than half of North-East pensioners worry about losing their independence in old age but fewer than one in five have talked about it with relatives, according to new research.
A study for Age UK County Durham found 58 per cent of today’s over-65s in the region worry about becoming dependent on others as they get older, but just 21 per cent have discussed the issue – and their wishes – with their families.
Nearly two-thirds (63 per cent) have either put off talking about it or find it too awkward to discuss.
More than half (59 per cent) want to stay in their own home as long as possible even after losing their independence, the survey found.
Harriet Gibbon, of Age UK County Durham, said: “The issue of how we maintain independent lives as we grow older is relevant to us all, whatever our circumstances.
“It is important that individuals, friends and family involved are aware of the options available that can help make this happen and that they feel comfortable discussing these.”
