A MAN trying to defend his home from three masked burglars was threatened with a samurai sword.
The householder, who has not been named, confronted the criminal trio when they broke into his home in the Retreat area of Sunderland at 7.30am today (Sunday, November 16).
One of the men threatened him with the sword and the gang stole his mobile phone and some cash before fleeing.
The man was left unhurt but shaken.
Northumbria Police are investigating and a 29-year-old man has been arrested.
Police are conducting extra patrols in the Retreat and Chester Road areas and appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
Detective Sergeant Nicola Mcallister said: “We want to hear from anyone who was in the Retreat or Chester Road area around 7.30am this morning and who saw three men acting suspiciously or wearing masks.
“If you were in that area this morning and have any information that could help us then I’d ask that you contact us as soon as possible.”
