A COUNTRY park can now offer environmental education in a cosy setting thanks to its new Mongolian yurt.

The yurt, at Hardwick Park in Sedgefield, County Durham, is one of the largest in the region and can accommodate up to 60 people.

Kitted out with colourful bunting, rustic furniture and a wood-burning stove, the weatherproof tent will provide a place for craft and educational activities for the thousands of schoolchildren and adults that visit each year.

Community groups, such as the Scouts, Girl Guides and craft clubs, can also use the yurt and members of the public can hire it for birthday parties and other events.

Park owner, Durham County Council, is even considering acquiring a wedding license for bride and grooms in search of a quirky venue.

Sara Fortune, park manager, said: “I think the yurt is brilliant. It is warm and sheltered but you can still see the trees through the roof window, which gives you a sense of being outdoors.”

The yurt was financed through car parking fees, all of which are invested back into the park.
