DOZENS of dogs have been seized in a raid at a suspected illegal puppy farm near Darlington.

In a joint operation, officers from Durham Police and the RSPCA executed search warrants at a property in Middleton St George yesterday.

Three people – two men and one woman – were arrested on suspicion of animal welfare offences.

They were interviewed at Darlington police station and have been summonsed to attend court.

A fourth person voluntarily attended the police station.

A total of 35 dogs – including breeding bitches and puppies – were seized and taken to a place of safety.

Other animals seized included a horse and an African grey parrot.

The joint, intelligence-led operation involved 20 police officers and ten from the RSPCA.

Leanne Plumtree, from the RSPCA, said: “This was an excellent result, demonstrating a joint commitment to cracking down on puppy farms, especially in the lead up to Christmas."

Chief Inspector Chris Reeves, of Darlington police, added: “I'm delighted with the result.

"A total of 37 animals have been rescued.

"We have a great relationship with the RSPCA and have a proven track of working well together.

"If the community report animal welfare concerns, we take them seriously and act – it is what the people of Darlington would want us to do.”

The RSPCA is leading the investigation, which is ongoing.
