A LEADER of a prestigious student debating society has been arrested on suspicion of rape.
Louis Richardson, 20, was detained by Durham Police on Friday, October 31.
Mr Richardson, a student at Durham University’s Josephine Butler College, was secretary of the Durham Union Society, which dates back to 1842.
It is understood he has now resigned his post.
A Durham Police spokeswoman said: “We can confirm a 20-year-old man was arrested by police on 31st October on suspicion of the rape of a female.
“This relates to an alleged offence at an address in Durham City in May of this year.
“He has been interviewed by detectives from the local safeguarding team and released on bail, pending further enquiries.”
Mr Richardson is due to answer bail early in the New Year.
