THREE North-East students will flee the region this weekend to raise money for charity in memory of a teenager who died tragically young.

Bethany Fleming, Lana Faidulla and Tom Purvis, together known as Team BLT, will take part in a “jailbreak” challenge in aid of the Cardiac Risk in the Young (Cry) charity in honour of James Campbell.

Like the trio, James studied at Macmillan Academy in Middlesbrough. But he died last November from young sudden cardiac death, aged just 16.

A jailbreak challenge sees participants try to get as far from their starting point as possible without spending any money.

The three friends, now all Durham University students, will start their adventure at Durham Prison at 8am on Saturday (November 15) and the clock stops at 8pm the following day.

James’ mother Karen Campbell, a teaching assistant at Macmillan Academy, said: “It would be lovely to think that they can get as far away as possible as that is the ultimate aim but if they could go via Pisa and remember our boy if they do – James always wanted to visit Pisa but never got the chance, even on his art trip to Italy.”
