A MAN left fighting for his life following a head-on collision has come out of a coma and is now in a stable condition in hospital.
The 22-year-old, from Shildon, County Durham, was a rear seat passenger in a silver VW Passat involved in a collision with a blue VW Passat at 12.50pm on Sunday, November 9, on the B6072 West Auckland Road near Shildon.
He was taken to James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, in critical condition and placed in an induced coma.
The 46-year-old driver of the blue Passat, from Bishop Auckland, suffered a fractured left knee cap and right foot in the crash and was treated at Darlington Memorial Hospital.
His passenger, a 28-year-old man, of Bishop Auckland, suffered whiplash, severe bruising and a burn from the airbag.
The silver Passat driver, a 21-year-old man from Shildon, was unhurt, and was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and bailed.
His front seat female passenger, a 19-year-old from Bishop Auckland, suffered a minor leg injury.
A second accident involving a Lexus IS and a Vauxhall Astra took place on the A6072 near first crash site at 5.30pm. It is not thought anyone was injured.
