ROYAL Marine Leon Marshall knows exactly how tough the route of the Yorkshire Grand Depart will be – after cycling the entire distance.
The 34-year-old major was one of a 70-strong military peloton that pedalled the entire 390km route through the county to assist in preparations for the race.
And among those joining him on the long and arduous test ride was Sergeant Scott Arthur, 29, a Catterick-based member of the Army’s Senior Cycling Team.
Exercise “Maillot Jaune” was one of a series of test exercises run in preparation for the world-famous event.
A member of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Cycling Association, Major Marshall started his cycling career as a child in Whitby but now rides successfully for several teams.
“Obviously coming from Yorkshire the opportunity to ride a race that I have watched as a child and ride and hopefully add to its success is a huge opportunity and one that I wouldn’t want to miss,” he said.
Sgt Arthur added: “It was great to be chosen to test the route, I’m sure a lot of others would have liked the role. It was a good two days.”
