A BUTCHER'S business which has been trading since boneshaker bicycles were invented has created an edible pie-cycle, to mark the arrival of the Tour de France.
Appleton's pork butchers, in Ripon, is displaying the bike-themed artwork, made from meat, pies and pastries, in its Market Place shop window ahead of the race passing through the city on Saturday (July 5).
Staff said it took 24 hours to cook and several hours to assemble, and includes giant pork pies for wheels, black pudding for the handlebars and pedals, link sausages for the chain, belly pork for the brakes, a gammon joint for the saddle and breakfast rolls for the frame.
Shop assistant Toni Vauvert said: "We wanted to do something fun to mark the Tour and show just what we’re made of here at Appleton’s.
"Everyone had an input – even our van driver – and it gives a whole new meaning to the notion of fast food. All we need now is a fork in the road.”
Modelled on French-style charcutier, the shop sells sells more than 3,500 pork pies a week.
