TWO scientists have received national awards for their outstanding contribution to physics.
Durham University researchers Professor Brian Tanner and Professor Charles Adams have been honoured for their work by the Institute of Physics.
Professor Tanner, who is chief scientific advisor to NetPark and chair of the County Durham Economic Partnership, receives the 2014 Gabor Medal and Prize for distinguished work in the application of physics in an industrial, commercial or business context.
His research on X-ray scattering was developed, through the Durham University spin-out company Bede Scientific, into a technology used in the semiconductor industry around the world.
His work on materials used in X-ray and gamma ray detectors, also underpins their use in airport security, medical imaging and radiation monitoring.
Professor Adams receives the Thomson Medal and Prize for distinguished research in atomic or molecular physics.
