THERE were feathers, fur and felines aplenty at an animal sanctuary open day.

Visitors to the Ark On The Edge sanctuary, in Woodland, enjoyed an array of entertainment on Saturday, including a pet show, bouncy castle, and flyball demonstrations.

Police were also in attendance to show children how they take fingerprints from crime scenes and mug-shots.

Staff from the Pets At Home store, in Bishop Auckland, presented £627 to the sanctuary, which had been collected during a month of fundraising in its honour.

Two staff members also helped with the pet show and provided goody bags to entrants.

The open day was to swell the coffers of a fundraising campaign to replace the aviaries at the sanctuary, on Woolley House Farm.

Pat Kingsnorth, from the sanctuary, said they had already raised £900 prior to the event, but needed to reach £4,000 before any work could take place.

She said: “The fundraising is just a bit slow, but everybody trying to raise money is the same.

“The weather held off for the open day and the pet show was really good.”

Meanwhile, there has been a recent surge of kittens at the sanctuary.
