EVENING shoppers did a double-take as children dressed as monks carried a ‘coffin’ through a city’s streets on Thursday night (June 26).
Pupils from Durham School dressed as medieval Holy Island monks carried a replica coffin through Durham City to mark their school’s 600th anniversary and the final journey of St Cuthbert’s remains to Durham Cathedral.
A procession left Durham School and went through the city centre, en route to the Cathedral for a special 600th anniversary service.
The spectacle followed a three-day 100-mile walk from Lindisfarne to Durham involving 24 pupils and eight staff.
At the end of the trek, the entire school gathered for an anniversary photo, spelling out ‘600’ on the Masters’ Green, and an RAF flypast.
The event is the latest in a series marking the leading independent school’s special anniversary.
