A N RAF fly past was one of the highlights of ceremonies held ahead of Armed Forces Day tomorrow (June 28).

One was staged in Richmond’s Friary Gardens and attended by Richmondshire District Council officials, veterans, cadets, civic dignitaries and forces personnel.

Children from local schools, who for the first time took part in the ceremony, read poems and speaches, included Lottie Gleisinger and Leticia Brooksbank, year seven pupils from Richmond School, who helped raise the HMS Heroes Standard.

Major Mark Inkester, chief of staff at Catterick Garrison, gave an address to the guests during Monday's ceremony before a bugler played.

District council chairman Russell Lord said: “It is important that our Armed Forces past and present are shown support and gratitude for the huge personal sacrifices they have made and continue to make for our country.”

Personnel, veterans and cadets were also honoured at the Hambleton District Council flag-raising ceremony in Northallerton.

The specially designed flag, based on the Union Flag, was raised by council chairman John Prest.

A prayer of dedication was read by the RAF Leeming Padre followed by a Hawk fly past from 100 Squadron.

Cllr Prest said: “Hambleton District Council is committed and proud to support the nation’s Armed Forces, veterans and cadets, especially those who continue to serve the community in such a professional and committed way.”
