AN EXHIBITION featuring the work of wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans will take place for Armed Forces Weekend at Bolton Castle.
This weekend (June 28 and 29) marks Armed Forces Weekend to celebrate the contribution to the country made by service personnel and to show support for personnel and veterans.
Bolton Castle, in Redmire, near Leyburn, will be displaying art and woodwork created by users of Phoenix House recovery centre in Catterick Garrison.
Tom Orde-Powlett, whose family owns the castle in Wensleydale and who was awarded the Military Cross in 2004 during his seven years’ service with The 1st Battalion Irish Guards, has agreed to donate the weekend’s takings to The Northern Echo’s First World War Centenary Campaign - £100,000 for Our Heroes.
The money will be used to fund a performing arts facility at Phoenix House.
The centre piece of the exhibition will be entries from years five and six at Le Cateau School in Catterick Garrison for a competition to design a t-shirt to be worn by residents at Phoenix House, including ten-year-old Lily Nicholson-Hume’s winning design.
In return, she and the runners up received vouchers donated by the Art Shop, Darlington and Gilpin Art in Richmond.
Help for Heroes representatives will be on hand with videos and information on the charity, and how members of the public can help as volunteers. The exhibition will remain on site until Friday, July 11.
Other attractions at Bolton Castle include an owl display, a falconry flying display, and the opportunity to feed wild boar.
Children will be able to try on period costumes, play medieval games and have a go at calligraphy.
Bolton Castle is open from 10am to 5pm daily.
