MEMORIES of a bygone era were brought back to life at an event to commemorate the 70th anniversary of D-Day.

Spirits were high as dozens of pensioners - including veterans and former armed forces personnel - enjoyed wartime entertainment at Age UK Darlington’s headquarters.

Organised by staff at the charity and hosted by its veterans group, the 1940s themed day got underway with games, quizzes and music from the era by Frank Williams and friends.

A buffet lunch was also provided before a ukulele session and tea dance finale.

While the day was an upbeat celebration of the veterans' lives, Reverend Robert Williamson of St Cuthbert’s Church also led a tribute to those who lost their lives during the D-Day landings.

Taking part in the day was 71-year-old Barbara Edwardson who served in the Women’s Royal Army Corps.

She said: “We are all really enjoying the day. We would like all veterans, young and old, to get involved with the veterans group.”

Chief executive of Age UK Darlington, Gillian Peel said: “I think it is crucial to hold events like this, as these veterans have a lot to remember – they have lived a lot of life.

“Although there is a serious side to the day, it is a celebration of what they have lived through.”

The veterans group meets every Wednesday from 10am to noon at Bradbury House.
