CHILDREN have played out their own World Cup – with Uruguay and South Korea coming out on top.
Youngsters at Trimdon Village Junior School have spent a week celebrating the World Cup, culminating in their own tournament with teams named after the 32 competitors in currently battling in Brazil.
Perhaps prophetically, England failed to make it out of the group stage in the senior tournament with Uruguay ultimately prevailing while South Korea won the junior competition.
Jane Addison, high level teaching assistant at the school, said: “It has been a very busy but fun week with all lessons geared around the World Cup.
“Children have been learning about the different countries playing in the World Cup as well as getting to play their own tournament.”
Pupils created posters passports about their various countries in geography lessons while also enjoying World Cup themed maths classes.
Lewis Carter, 10, captained Uruguay to victory by beating Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 in the semi-final and Honduras in the final 4-0.
He said: “It has been a really fun week and I’m pleased we won.”
Lia Marnell, nine, led South Korea to a 3-0 semi-final win over Chile and a 6-4 final victory against the USA.
He said: “The best part was playing the matches, I’m really proud of my team.”
The school has a history of celebrating big events.
They held a big picnic to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and a week of activity for the 2012 Olympics.
