The North-East's leading young athletes will be in action at Gateshead International Stadium on Saturday in the annual Inter-Counties Track and Field Championships.
For most of the athletes the event is the last competition before the highlight of the summer - the 84th English Schools Championships at Birmingham on July 11/12, when the nation's best track and field performers will be chasing coveted medals for their respective counties.
Today's competitors are the winners from last weekend's Cleveland, Durham, Northumberland and Cumbria county schools championships, including Crook's 15-year-old double North-East middle-distance champion, Markhim Lonsdale, who curren tly tops the UK under-17 800m and 1500m rankings.
Last year Lonsdale won the 800m junior boys' bronze medal at the Alexander Stadium and next month will move up into the intermediate boys' ranks, where he is expected to compete in the 1500m.
