RIVALS from two discount stores will go head-to-head on the football field tomorrow (Friday, June 20).
The eyes of the sporting world may be on Brazil right now, but the ‘Poundland derby’ means just as much to those involved as the World Cup action.
Teams from Poundland’s stores in the Prince Bishops and The Gates shopping centres, both in Durham City, will battle it out on the pitch at Durham Community Business College, Ushaw Moor, tomorrow night.
The match is being staged to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Research, but both teams are taking it very seriously.
Stuart Hamblett, manager of the Prince Bishops store, said: “People might think this is a bit of fun, but I’ve had the team in training from seven o’clock this morning.
“Joking aside, we are really looking forward to taking on our Durham counterparts and raising money for this great charity.
“I’m delighted that so many of our staff are getting involved.”
The event starts at 7pm and is open to the public. Entry costs 50p. There will be a raffle, tombola and stalls.
