THE Brabazon Trophy returns to Seaton Carew after almost three decades next week when top amateurs from around the world will be look for glory.

Previous winners include Sandy Lyle, Gordon Brand, Ronan Rafferty, Charl Schwartzel, Peter Hanson and Barnard Castle’s very own Tour player Robert Dinwiddie.

This time around England players such as Jordan Smith, Ashley Chesters, Ryan Evans will be looking to finish ahead of some promising international prospects such as South African Thirston Lawrence and Scottish British Boys champion Ewen Ferguson.

The Brabazon Trophy takes place over four days from Wednesday, June 25 with the final round taking place on Saturday, June 28. There is free entry all days.

DARLINGTON’S Darren Grey claimed a reputable runner-up spot in the One-Armed Championship after losing out on the first extra hole in sudden death.

Grey, a former world no 1, was 15th after day one in Sussex but got his game back in the knock-out stages and reached the final. He picked up the trophy for best nett qualifier.

Grey said: “It was great again and I just need to put in some extra practice and a full-time sponsor so I can hit the disabled golf European circuit.”

THE official registered charity of Newcastle United Football Club is to hold a special Golf Day at Slaley Hall on September 3 in association with Bidvest 3663.

The Newcastle United Foundation event will raise vital funds to help disadvantaged children, young people and their families across the region, with around 50,000 people benefitting from the organisation’s range of sport, health and educational projects each year.

The event will begin at 10am with breakfast and registration before teeing off with a shot gun start at 1pm on the Priestman Course. After the 18th hole, guests are invited to a drinks reception followed by a two-course dinner and prize giving ceremony in the Kielder Banqueting Suite. Teams of four are available from only £495.
