A LONG-running exhibition about the experience of North-East soldiers serving in Afghanistan closes later this month (Sunday, June 29), but will still be available online.
Courageous Restraint captures the experiences of men and women from the 3rd Battalion, The Rifles.
It will be at the Durham Light Infantry (DLI) Museum and Durham Art Gallery, Aykley Heads, Durham City, until Sunday, June 29.
But recordings and images will be available beyond that online at dlidurham.org.uk.
The exhibition, which opened in November 2010, reflects the experiences of troops who served in Afghanistan between October 2009 and April 2010.
The Rifles served in the upper Helmand valley, around Sangin and Kajaki Dam.
Over seven months, 30 of the battalion were killed and many more were wounded.
The exhibition makes links between the mission and the Durham Light Infantry’s earlier involvement in the country in the 19th century.
Gillian Robinson, DLI Museum and Durham Art Gallery manager, said: “We are very proud to have been able to tell the story of The Rifles’ time in Afghanistan through Courageous Restraint.
“The exhibition has been very popular with visitors so we are pleased that many of the items and exhibits can still be viewed on our website.
“We also have plans to put additional materials online over the coming months to ensure that the bravery and commitment of the men and women of The Rifles continues to be recognised.”
The DLI became part of the Light Infantry in the 1960s, which became part of The Rifles in 2007.
